When PEF staff sat down to nominate teachers for CharterUP's grant program, Highland Park teacher Ms. Muñoz was an easy choice. She runs the school's Ballet Folklórico after-school program — not because it's in her job description, but because she's seen what it does for her students.
The program gives Title I students a place to belong after school: somewhere to dance, hang out, and be with their peers instead of being home alone or elsewhere. For many of them, it's the best part of their week.
Ms. Muñoz's commitment goes well beyond the classroom. She's used her own money to buy and sew the students' uniforms, making sure every dancer looks and feels ready to perform. As her nomination put it, "her passion for students goes beyond the classroom ... she's an incredible role model."
That dedication paid off. Ms. Muñoz was named a CharterUP grant winner, earning $1,000 in funding plus $1,000 in transportation support for the program — money that will help cover costs she's too often covered herself, and get students to and from performances.
Congratulations, Ms. Muñoz, and thank you for everything you do for PfISD students. Know a teacher going above and beyond? PEF wants to hear about it — reach out to community@thepfoundation.org and let us know who deserves recognition next.
